Doctor talking to cuopleYour wedding is right around the corner and all you can think about are the changes that will now take place throughout your life. You may be thinking about how you will share furniture and who will park where in the driveway. Don't forget to take a closer look at your health insurance. As your life changes, you are sure to see the need to make some changes in the way your health insurance is set up both now and throughout the future. There are a few things to keep in mind.

Should You Change Your Policy?

When you get married, you need to make a decision about the current health insurance you have. If you do not have a policy and your soon-to-be spouse does, you can often be added onto that policy with ease.

If you both have a policy though, you need to take a few minutes to compare your options. You can drop one policy in favor of the other (perhaps because of better benefits), or you can choose to keep both. If you select both, you may need to designate one policy as your primary policy.

Updating as You Go

If you have an employer-sponsored insurance policy, take the time to discuss your options with your employer to determine the best solution. As your live moves along, you will likely need to keep making upgrades or changes. Even if you purchase a health insurance plan outside of an employer-sponsored plan, you will need to assess the new risks you have and add more coverage for other needs, including dependents. You may need to consider the addition of life insurance as well, especially as you take on more debt or have children.

With marriage comes a great deal of change, and one of the areas you'll need to make decisions on is your health insurance policy. Often times, it is best to work closely with your agent to determine the best fit for your unique needs as they stand right now. A policy with both of you listed could be less expensive and provide more benefits to you as well in some cases.
